Is it possible to continue this as a COmmunity Project?
« on: November 17, 2008, 05:42:30 AM »
I'm aware this Project seems dead, but that doesn't mean it has to be.
I like the whole idea of free knowledge so that everyone can be involved in the development process of games and theory instead of only a few that have the brainpower and the innocence to make it through college

Can This be expanded into a community project instead of headed by just one person?
I'd get the impression there would be more benefit out of it and it might actually get somewhere...

i could set up a new jnrdev page
• as wiki
• with the existing articles already in
• and you can add articles
± or edit unclear parts in past articles

Sounds good

Gimme linx once your done ^___________^

I really want to expand the project to be a complete college esque course that can be explained well to any new person to programming. ANd explain the main purposes of each as well as the possibilities.

How everything can be used with one another.

-Hex-Hacking
-C++, C#, AS, Java, python, etc-Standard input outputs
-SDL, OpenGL-Graphic Libraries
-Sound Engineering
-SQL-Database Management
-Html, php-Web Development

Basically to give everyone the ability to go as big as they want
-THough the real fun would be in the Input/output, Laglessness (Movement towards Hex) and arts.

lulz... I used to call it C number

HELL NO! :D
M$ created uber language = still too difficult to noobs
also.... not that I'm an expert at all... but... C# is only cool cuz of xbox readiness....

However... as more things get hacked more... any language will be a fine language....
And as more Emulators are Created.... More PC will be used...
And as More open source games and programs are created, there will be less of a point in even buying a system in the first place

Also... The way I see it...
-Once I get a PC to TV converter I won't even need to buy anything anymore since the way things have been going... the awesome stuff is user created, free, online and on a computer...
-I already have a Joy to Key program, and have used an xbox 360 controller as a mouse a few times

Yeah.... thats the way I see it...

hey guys,

programming course - good idea.

here are my 2 cents:

C#
+ easier than C/C++ to learn (no hard-to-debug null pointer crashes)
+ XNA => you can play your games on the xbox

Ruby
+ the super most pwnsome easy (yet powerful) language around
+ i started a ruby game framework for beginners. still needs some refining, but here's space invaders in 180 lines of ruby code

if you want to learn more about game programming with ruby, check out gosu - http://code.google.com/p/gosu/wiki/RubyTutorial

I'm more into Ruby since I'm a believer in hacking before giving into a Companies personal Programming Language...

But anything is good. It more a matter of what we learn, then which language we learn it.

Heres what I would want to go into
-Organization-Intro, Preloader, Menu, Game, Cutscenes, Credits
-Loading, Saving, dumping, calling, data managment (including interaction between computers and to a server)
-User Inputs (Mouse, Keyboard, Controller)
-Physics and Hittesting (lines, curves and sand [Sand is the concept of pixle by pixle physics instead of straight lines and curves over blocks)
-Timers-as an event, condition, etc...
-AI
-Sound Library
-Graphics Library
-Web Development-Including browser Games

And....
-Methods of Education-What is the Best way for teaching Programming/anything?
--Just give people the ability to cut and paste?
--Give people the ability to cut and paste with small Screw ups? (So they are forced to read the tutorial to fix them)
--Give people Vocabulary words which they will have to use in a specific context
--Give them Cut and Paste

Your not going to be the one that is apart of this.
-Its just when you setup the wiki
-Give people the oppertunity to speak about these topics : /
--Then eventually an admin can accept a draft...
---Unless it will completely be publicly edited...

if you do this in an easy to understand concept
i will begin the flor-mula religion

[spoilers:29e9n51r](ps florian formula)[/spoilers:29e9n51r]

If made, I will show no public support.
(Though will make immense contributions for.... a particular side.... <.<)
:P

But yeah... hopefully thats what happens.
Right now I'm as much a noob as you can be, except with strategies on learning besides reading (See other peoples source codes, Copy and paste, seek the help of those that are open to suggestions)
I feel lucky that florian is thinking about doing this.
Though Its going to have to be figured out how to make sure florain has to do minimal work,
-perhaps make the Jnr Dev a Community that has a tutorial on figuring out coding so that the work can be done by an excited group of noobs instead of putting all the work on a single Programmer

When I say figuring out.... I mean instead of Forcing a person to go through hello world and all the bull. You have a person....
-know what they are looking for (lets say a 2d physics engine)
-Look it up on the internet for tutorials/source code (Look
--If looking at source code; understand what you need (Velocity, gravity x/y, hit detection, bounce, momentum, dealing with curves and slants)
--If looking up tutorals; Make it able to be cut and pasted while including comments to ease customization
-And Finally, a way to intergrate it with everything else (This would probably be the only true Language by Language tutorial since you don't use #include with Java and the way subclasses work for each one, etc, etc, etc)

I'd also Question making a "Weekly Vocabulary List" Class, so each person can understand the universal requirements for all programming languages (Which actually kinda helps sinc
-And then Show the Language specific Equality of a specific definition
--Hittest in Java = Hittest in C++ = Hittest in Flash
---They all just use different words

In all though....
I really don't want to rely on Florian...
Not because He isn't a Superstar "A"numberOne Champion
But Because...
If everyone depended on Florian, Development would be as fast as Florian's Super Powers go (What about Florians Vacation?, or other projects, or general life)
-Thus Development could potentially very Slow indeed...

Just so you know, there's OpenCDS. As far as I'm concerned, the open source project is abandoned, but it could be an interesting starting point.

Anyway, this community idea would be really cool.
