Skin Making Help
« on: July 14, 2008, 06:29:44 PM »
For any of you having trouble understanding the palette used in SMW's skins, I'm posting this guide to the palette layout in hopes that it helps you understand it better.

Keep in mind that this is the palette from 1.7 AFE.  1.8's default palette has slight color differences from this, but they're essentially the same.
Hopefully, this helps some of you understand the layout and make some nice skins!
One last note.  This pattern repeats for the colors used by players 2-4.

BIG UPDATE!!!
Due to a new discovery, I've decided to bump this topic with a bit of useful information!
I've looked into it upon stumbling across it, and I have confirmed that it's possible.
You can add extra colors onto the player palette!
That's right! Want your own set of team colors? Or maybe a new color that stays the same on every team? Not a problem!
Simply go into your palette file and add the new trio of colors onto the end!
Be sure to move the see-through shield column so that it's on the far right!
With this, you can add up to 22 new colors to your palette, making for a total of 30 COLORS!
I've personally tested this out, and I can assure you, it does work! Exceeding the 30 colors, however, doesn't cause a crash or anything.  It just doesn't change the skin color to whatever's below it in the palette.

Enjoy this new discovery and feel free to put it to use for mods and graphics pack if you want!
(Although I don't see why anyone would actually need 30 colors...)

How did this post go unanswered for so long? I'm sorry Darkandroid, I must've missed this one.
It's for a total of 30 sets of 3 colors.
That includes the Outline, Shield, and Pure White colors as a set on the chart above.

I should mention that skins made with custom palettes in mind are not eligible for inclusion in future releases.

Excuse me: What is the fourth stance of a skin for?

1st: Char walking 1
2nd: Char Walking 2
3rd: Char Jumping
4th: Looks like winning ( I never see it when playing)
5th: Char Lost
6th: Char Smashed

Here's a simple list of all the instances in which a frame is used.
1st frame - Standing still/Walking frame 1/frozen/Second place in tour/tournament/world
2nd frame - Walking frame 2
3rd frame - Jumping/First place in tour/tournament/world
4th frame - Skidding
5th frame - Non-stomp death/Lost match/Last place in tour/tournament/world
6th frame - Stomped/Third place in tour/tournament/world
The things in bold are the main things to keep in mind for each frame, since that's where you'll see each of them the most.
Hope that helps anyone that still isn't familiar with skin layouts!

It's possible to chose ANY color for the characters? Obviously except the special colors.

Choosing the colors from the top row of the palette gives you the colors shown in the picture at the top of this topic.  Any colors aside from those just show up as that color in the game.

So I can use, for example, as many green as I want in the same skin and all of them will be shown?

Yea, but this doesn't play out too well when you want to use the skin with different teams...
