Why they have such an anti-homebrew policy still pisses me off.

I mean it probably has nothing to do with the fact that homebrew can run emulators and play the virtual console games for free, right

that may be the case, but believe it or not there are people out there who dont believe in piracy.  and simply want to play other peoples games.  it would also be very easy for nintendo to integrate the HBC as a default channel, and then remove the ability for people to install emulators on it.  Regardless of what console you have, there are always going to be methods of piracy. To me, the $5.00 - $10.00 games they sell on the Shop channel to only the users that have wireless internet in their house would be less important in blocking than the people who install modchips and pirate $50.00 games, and dont need internet.  Besides Modchips have virtually no other use other than playing pirated games :p .

for those of you who have trouble getting files on your wii, this nifty tool will download, install, and keep all of your homebrew applications up to date on the HBC!

I bet some of you are pretty happy with your emulators and homebrew apps and games.  Well it just got better!  If any of you have tried the n64 emulator, then by now you must now it sucks a fat one (at least until the team working on it has made more progress that is.  I know you guys are trying your hardest, keep up the good work)  But i have an alternative method for  running n64 games on your wii for now.

Just so you know, a .wad file is the raw dump of data left from a decrypted VC game.  When you copy a VC game to your wii it is a content.bin state, or a encrypted state so that you are unable to move it to another wii and install it.  each wii has a unique key.bin file used for your wii to decrypt the VC game.  This file is not copied over when you move your game to an SD card.

Wad injection!  This is the process of removing the roms from VC channels and injecting your own into them!

WARNING:  THERE ARE SEVERAL DRAW BACKS TO USING THIS SYSTEM

1.  The channel MUST be stored on your wii (severely limits your space for roms)
2.  Only 1 rom can be stored in each channel.
3.  Unless you have quite a bit of skill in hex editing and decompiling wad images, the rom will appear exactly to the same as the host wad.  (EX:  I use The sin and punishment wad and inject smash bros 64 into it.  The game will have sin and punishment's save image, when you click on the channel in your wii it will have a preview of sin and punishment, the controls will be mapped for sin and punishment, it will have sin and punishments Home manual, and it is limited to the amount of players sin and punishment had.)
4. It is extremely hard to do this without obtaining illegal files (but possible, and i will discuss both methods).

[/color]

However, there are some advantages to emulating it on the wii rather than the PC.

Nintendo did any amazing job in designing their emulator.  You WILL be able to get some roms to run faster and with fewer gfx/sfx errors than your computer n64 emulator.

I would also like to say at this time that while you are able to use wad injection with other VC games and consoles, i will only be addressing the n64 because as of now the Homebrew n64 emu is shit, and there are quite a few regular emulators for other consoles that will run TONS better than their nintendo counterpart, and they are safer and easier to use.

Also, if you are reading this in hopes of being able to run any n64 expansion game (perfect dark, DK 64, majora's mask, etc.)  stop now.  Ninty's emu's are updated as they need to add support for their games.  Since none of their releases so far are Esxpansion games, the games wont even to begin to launch, and will cause a massive crash on your wii.  This will not hurt it, but it will require  a hard reboot.

First thing im going to address is the illegal path (EXTREMELY EASY)  And the legal path (VERY DIFFICULT, ADVANCED USER, PLUS YOU NEED TO OWN THE VC GAME SIN AND PUNISHMENT AS THAT HAS THE LATEST/MOST POWERFUL VERSION OF NINTY'S N64 EMU!)

1. Illegal-
* obtain a key.bin file (most commonly known as common-key.bin) you do not need the one from your wii.  Just anyone.  This file is illegal to download and distribute.  a key.bin file is needed to decompile the wad file, but since our methods of installation bypass the wii's content checking, you do not need yours for it to be installed.
*Obtain a sin & punishment .wad
*both of these files can be found at "the usual places"  DO NOT ASK FOR THEM*

2. Legal-
*oh boy, let me start of by warning you that yo my quite easily be getting into some stuff thats way over your head.  You need to be able to extract your own sin ad punishment .wad file, and your own key.bin file.  This uses a method that may brick your wii, and is VERY ADVANCED!  I say since you are doing this to inject ROMS (something you probably have obtained illegally anyway) into files, why not just break the law again?
*I am not even going to deal with this.  If you brick your wii its your own fault. - http://wiinewz.com/forums/nintendo-news ... er-v1.html  This will get you started.

Alright if you are looking to only insert your rom, and have no interest in modifying anything else (so even though your wii will be running the new rom, it will have all of the old info/controls from the previous game)...

...then you only need 2 things (besides the previously listed files)!
1. http://skhsarki.extra.hu/files/download ... Anorch.zip - the wad manager (documentation - http://wiibrew.org/wiki/Homebrew_apps/WAD_Manager )
2.  http://www.mediafire.com/?0w1xkxvgia4 - auto injectuwad (Documentation/tutorial - http://gbatemp.net/index.php?showtopic=85521 )

Install the wad manager on to your wii via the HBC channel or the twilight hack, and then use it to install the modified wad!

If you plan on editing the wad further for pretty much custom anything, look below.  Some of this stuff is for advanced users only!

Tutorial for everything - http://gbatemp.net/index.php?showtopic=91206
More in-depth banner editing tutorial. - http://gbatemp.net/index.php?showtopic=89793

Thats it for now, i will probably update this more later.

IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS OR NEED HELP, PLEASE ASK ME THEM IN IRC! DO NOT POST THEM HERE!  DO NOT ASK FOR WADS, ROMS, OR COMMON-KEY.BIN HERE!

Guess what people? we finally have SAFE ways of making your wii region free!

http://wiibrew.org/wiki/Homebrew_apps/Starfall
(sadly this mod only works on wii's running 3.2E and 3.2U  if you dont have either of these firmwares, then pm me and i will tell you how to down grade your wii.  But be warned, downgrading is a very dangerous process and may brick your wii)

Even though the wiki page states that you may brick your wii, this is only placed there because modding your firmware in any way may brick your wii.  However, this method of patching your current firmware rather than installing a hacked one has proven to be extremely safe.

boot this app up via the twilight hack or the HBC, and then run it and there are several mods you can install on your wii.

Mods are:

    * No healhwarning screen  - removes the retarded warning screen
    * Region free GC games with video mode patch - exacly as it says, video mode patch means it will auto change video modes when using pal on ntsc and vice-versa.
    * Region free Wii games - obvious
    * Region free channels  - this includes VC channels
    * No mainmenu BGM  - obvious
    * Start rescue-menu when Y is held on 1st GC controller - this is a menu that will restore your wii to an old menu, this is for emergency use only and is a built in mode thats already on your wii even before this hack.
    * Remove rescue-menu diagnostic disc check - obvious

you get to pick which mods you want to apply, not all need to be patched.  You can remove these anytime by using the app to re-patch  your wii, downgrading, or upgrading your firmware.

DVD playback!

Quote
Some fantastic news from  Erant

As you all know, I’ve been working on libdi (or the DVD Access library) for a while now. We had some problems getting it out to release because of the difficulties we encountered while writing the second part of this topic. The DVDX installer instead will install a small, hidden, channel on your Wii that allows you to read DVDs on an unmodified system. It is not an installer for a patched IOS. You may however need one, depending on your system.

Usage of this package is fairly simple. Run the installer.dol found in the package, follow the onscreen instructions, and you’re done.

Once you’ve done that, you can enjoy the splendor of mplayer. That what started out as a simple proof of concept has rapidly turned into a full-featured media player, under the nourishing hands of dhewg. The main aim of the mplayer project was to get DVDVideo going, but it also supports reading video files off the SD card. (Experimental).

A patch for Wii64, the N64 emulator for the Wii, will also be available shortly. This patch will allow you to read games off a DVD.

Indeed, wii homebrew has brought us dvd playback.... something nintendo stated was impossible due to hardware limitations.
it has also brought us emulators, custom channels, etc.

Wii manager!  put your sd card in your computer, and this app will keep you updated with the latest software, and will pre-install all hacks needed with instructions for running homebrew.

beyond regions free.  wii region info changer!  This app not only allows you to play games from different regions, but allows you to make a hybrid/change your region!  Ever wanted to connect to the Japanese VC shop and get some of their games (since they get about 30% more than we do)?  ITS ALL POSSIBLE NOW!  you can even add friend codes from people who are in different regions (want to brawl/kart general guy or tanuki?)  This amazing app also lets you safely downgrade (or upgrade) from the faggish 3.3 firmware which has absolutely no consumer benefit, to the amazing and homebrew feature full 3.2!

none of these files are by any means illegal.  all of them were made with open source tools and did not require the use of Nintendo's SDK.  Its a completely different situation than that of the Xbox's.  I other words  You do not need to worry about these being posted here.  The only negative aspect to Modding at this point is you void your warranty (which i clearly say at the start of the tutorial in giant bright red text).  and if you are the epitome of retard, soft bricking your wii which can be fixed with a few difficult steps. :p

This is a mystery to me.  Early the other day i tested this with tanuki, and we found that i was unable to send him messages from the wii menu when i had my wii set to an american area.  I was able to do so AFTER i switched my area to germany though.
