So... Tilesets...
« on: May 22, 2008, 06:08:03 PM »
Ok, now that we have 1.8 and tileset addition, what would we do about the flood of tilesets? Here's my idea:
We have a topic for the tilesets that the SMW staff agrees are high quality/ often used. This topic would most likely include tilesets by Sgraff: like the SMB3 extras, NSMB, YI, etc.

This is what I have so far.

Super Mario Bros.

Super Mario Bros. 2

Super Mario Bros. 3 (includes customs)

Super Mario Advance Bonus

Super Mario World

Of course I will go through them and fix and change some stuff. I have some more tiles in progress.

Looks like the unused tiles weren't made...
Ah well.

I'm rather sad that there's quite a few SMB2J tiles missing (namely the ground, underground palette tiles, 1-3 platforms etc). Would it be possible to add these?

On another note, the "tree-platform" (the ones used in 1-3 in SMB) have a little shadow added to the top of their tiles making it look strange when stacking them like they are supposed to be.

..Also cool would be having SMB/2J clouds and SMB bushes, just for consistency.

..But anyways, good job! I really like the tilesets so far and can't wait for the next set to be implemented (as in, the ones that are posted here but aren't in the beta). I especially like the 8-bit tiles that were upgraded to 16-bit, great work!

What is this one, or what should we call it?

I would think Miscellaneous would work.

Here's all of Sgraff's tilesets made usable in SMW.

Also, would it be fine if I posted this in FC?

Okay, I am open to tileset ideas. For ideas I mean.

- Original tiles that were not done before.
- Different colors for existing tiles in order to allow them for other uses.
- Tiles from other games that do not fit therefor can be converted into SMB style. (ex. YI or NSMB tiles)
- Tiles that we missed or are missing.

Just assuring that you're aware of these, I really really do wish to see them implemented:

I do not know which version of SMB2J you mean. Do you mean the tiles from allstars version Lost Levels? I thought they were the same tiles as SMB allstars. I also do not know what "tree-platform" you mean. Do you mean mushroom platforms? I do not see a shadow on them.

"Also cool would be having SMB/2J clouds and SMB bushes, just for consistency."

Do you mean creating 16-bit versions of the 8-bit originals?

Glad you asked! Sorry for not having given more precise detail the last time.

I was primarily talking about the Famicom Disc System SMB2J, 8-bit, perhaps turned to 16-bit, here's a spritesheet I found on that one "the spriter's resource", though I could commence in ripping the stuff myself if need be.

In the SMB1 tileset, .
It doesn't have an equivalent without the little shadow at the top.

Well here is an unfinished SMB/2J tileset. You may notice there was a lot to add and create customly. Some tiles like the treetop in SMB2J is just staggerly difficult to make into 16-bit so I might skip it. Or I might add the 8-bit and then update it into 16-bit sometime in the future.

Sorry for stating this a tad late, but you never cease to amaze me, looks great.

Anyways, an overall question for all tilesets, just to reassure: Are these going to be contained in the next release or are they remaining seperate as a downloadable extension?

I hope all of my tilesets can be in the release as I imagine they would be used to widely by people of the SMW community for map making. It just simply would make things easier for the casual gamer who is not interested in finding gfx packs or anyone in general. Anyhow, I have to get back to working on the tileset. I have not touched it on the grounds that I have been busy lately with other things.

Please in next release... I don't want to have to download a tileset just to play 1 or 2 maps. :P
