this is rather difficult due to hardware limitations on the DS and lack of SDL on the DS.

Also, is there any way, short of buying three new Wiimotes, that I could change the bot characters? I'm getting tired of fighting three anti-guys.

Try switching yourself to 2nd, 3rd, and 4th players individualy, and then change the bots into any character of your choice.
