Well since this forum is apparently in need of life support I'll thorw you guys a few things I found off of Facepunch.

Dwarf Fortress:

http://http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/index.html

Dwarf Fortress is a popular ASCII rougelike where you start and manage a settlement of Dwarves, defending it from the dangerous wildlife along with the evil goblins and mischievous kobolds, ultimately aiming to create a thriving city. It also has an adventure mode. This game is very difficult, and you'll need all the help you can get.

The Dwarf fortress wiki. Extremely helpful.
some particularly useful pages:
User made tilesets. Useful if you're having problems understanding the ascii.
what you need to know to start your settlement.

Google Earth War:

http://http://www.gewar.net/war/index.php

Little more than a time waster, GEWar is a game that uses google earth (I kid you not) along with the above website to make a simulated war where you fight for control over cities. It sounds stupid, but it doesn't require much devotion. The idea is fairly simple but you will need to understand it to play. You can make alliances, so if a few of you get together you could make a 72dpi alliance. If you do this you should all pick a part of the world to spawn together in.

GEWar wiki

Elona:

http://http://homepage3.nifty.com/rfish/index_e.html

Probably the most ridiculous RPG I've ever seen. It, like Dwarf Fortress, is a Rougelike, but it's not ASCII. It has a story, although it seems to take a backseat to it's ability to interact with your environment in ways you'd never expect. There's a lot of adult themes, though nothing graphic. To get an idea of how absurd this game really is you'll have to either have to read the wiki or see for yourself. All I can tell you is I've never seen an RPG that allowed you to use underwear as a weapon... until I played this.

Elona Wiki. Don't let the innocent front page fool you.

Didn't get this one from facepunch but it's a goodie...
Red Alert: A Path Beyond:

http://http://www.apathbeyond.com/

Basically the first game in the Command & Conquer: Red Alert series, but as an FPS. You play as an infantry unit for either the Allied or Soviet army and use the funds you receive to purchase vehicles and stronger infantry units based on those from the game. It has flaws, it's a very awkward engine for automatic weapons and there are some balance issues, but the gamma release is nearing completion. They're also working on a Red Alert 2 FPS called Apocalypse Rising, which hasn't been released yet.

Wow. Nostalgia. Sad truth. The most awesome commercial games of the past end up as freeware for oldie junkies.

Ok, ok, ok, I get it already.  The horrid stigma surrounding me and one of the many genres of game I enjoy.  However, I am not letting this one slide by, so without further ado, here's Hydorah.  This is a freeware shooter harkening back to the greats of old, blending gameplay elements from titles such as Gradius, Raiden, R-Type, and many more, and making itself into an original new game with a retro feel.  With 16 levels(and 27 side stages), 30 bosses, branching paths, multiple unlockable weapons, numerous secrets, and a fair challenge(unlike those frustrating bullet-fests that think turning the screen into a disco ball is fun), this one is pretty damn good.

video and download here

Hey. Bump.

I recommand Gang Garrison 2 to you 2D-team-based-matches lovers. This is a remake (or, more likely, demake) of Valve's Team Fortress 2 (I guess most of you already know about it, though); 2D side-scrolling style, in a 'faux retro' pixelated fashion. The game is free, open-source and made on Game Maker 8.

GG2 is much simplier and 'fairier' than Team Fortress 2. There's no secondary or melee weapons and no loadout and hats (yet), sadly, but heh. There's no crits, no ambushing due to the 2D nature of the game, and skill relies more on platforming, aiming and cooperating than anything.

Game modes are the same as TF2's, except there's no Payload yet. GG2 has its own game mode, Generator, in which you destroy the ennemy's power generator by damaging it (thought it's being reworked on as for now).

Lastly, it's easy to make custom maps (or at least easier than for a 3D game) and since the game is open source you can customize it to your liking as long it stays compatible (though there's a bunch of standalone mods, namely a Team Fortress Classic demake).
