[solved] categories or yayhooray free for all style?
« on: January 06, 2007, 07:32:01 PM »
hey,

i'm currently thinking about wether i should bother to implement categories as seen in phpbb or if it's enough to have a yayhooray "free for all" style board.

for more info see this:

i've currently only implemented a free for all thingy. see the screenshots for more info.

update: i've made up my mind, the solution is here.

Actually, I kind of like the catagory system. And from what I see, adding tags to the catagory system would work well. I see a lot of possibility with the tags. A well Organized forum means that it is easier to find fan-made content.
Edit: I went to that YayHoray place, and it was very disorganized. It would be hard of you were looking for maps and all you see is random other topics.

hm... yay horray seems to have only 5 major "tags" (aka categories), which you can select individually. i guess i can add something similar to blahblahblah.

you know what... i think i'll just call it blahblah from now on. that extra blah is too much blah for meh.

Well, I can't wait to see it, expecially if it has HTML code. That would help out a lot.
Edit: I just had an idea. What if the user chooses what view they want (catagory or yayhooray).

i've finally settled on a way to handle this: blahblah will feature both: categories and tags.

in fact categories are merely "highlighted" tags. Don't worry about what that means, you'll see once blahblah is finished. The good thing is, that we'll end up having the best of both worlds: free tagging (tagclouds) and somewhat "structured" content through categories (yay hooray).

categories (or highlighted tags as they're currently called in my development version) also have the advantage of giving a rough outline of what can be talked about.

... and tags represent what people are really talking about ^^

That sounds like a strategy forged from pure win.

This project is sounding better the more I read about it.  I'll have to pick up Rails too so I can hack it.
