Star Tower
« on: January 02, 2012, 06:13:55 PM »
Hey everyone. I've had a game in the works based off of Super Mario War for a while, but i've had homework and other games to work on, and I kind of forgot about it for a bit. This was originally a collab with someone else, but we lost contact. I wanted it to have a level editor and multiplayer mode, but at this rate, i'll get lucky if I even get 50 official levels on it. Here it is so far, maybe 10% complete.

http://www.newgrounds.com/dump/item/5fa ... b27a192a69

This is obviously a platformer. The main point of the game is to collect the Star from every level. As you can see from the demo, I don't yet have the Star even in it yet. -.- There will be a timer, and the goomba right now will be replaced by the goomba from SMW1.8, and I will also add red koopa and green koopa. There will be at least 50 different levels to play in, all different difficulties. You will get points based on how fast you finish a level. The 50 levels... well, I was going to make some of them, but I might also take levels that you create. The levels will all be 24 blocks tall by 32 blocks wide. You can use any tiles from SMW1.8, or even ones from 1.6 and 1.7.

If you have any questions, please feel free to post them here. I'm sure there will be, since I didn't explain this very well. O.O

Thanks for reading!

Ever tried Sauerbraten? No game in the world has beaten it yet. Only one that has come close is Legend of Zelda.

Super Mario War v1.8 Beta 2 FTW.

Since all of the sprites I am currently using for this game are from Super Mario War v1.8 Beta 2, I will need to put the creators of those sprites in the credits. Who were the people who made SMW 1.8Beta2? Or should I put in everyone that is shown on the start page of that game?

Firstly, I'm terribly sorry that none of our members have replied in this thread so far :/
I tried to play the game but for some reason it didn't work for me (albeit I did not try very hard :P)

Anyways...

THANKS AGAIN TO EVERYONE!

Inevitably, we have forgotten to thank somebody for their contribution.  So
many people contributed ideas it's hard to keep track of everybody! :)  If you
think we've missed mentioning you or anyone else, please let us know and we'll
add it in a hurry.
[/spoilers:e2ldc1bt]

As you can see that list is quite dated -- many others including myself contributed in one way or another to the official package.

I just played your game (the first time I mentioned trying, input was not recognized and the goomba kept killing me.) Quite a hard level for a first level (small spaces to walk next to spikes, a goomba that freely walks on those spikes, having to bounce off of him to make it across the first jump, requiring a crouch slide to reach the message block, requiring a crouch jump to beat the level -- in all pretty... different level design (I do understand this is a placeholder level/tech demo).

Good luck on your efforts.

Thanks Felix. Finally got back here to post.

Here, i'll put an update here:

http://www.newgrounds.com/dump/item/46e ... 8f224ac7c9

As you can see, no real title page yet, only the game. Not sure how to make a level creator, but i'll try to make it work.

Thanks for the list of helpers, I think i'll just put "We thank Samuele Poletto, Florian Hufsky and all of 72dpiarmy for helping make this game a possibility!", if that's OK with all of you. I wish I could do more to put this site back on the map, but for now, i'll try to finish this before July or August 2012.

Updated. Lava glitch fixed (if you were big and jumped in the lava, you froze but did not die). Coded red koopa so it would stay on ledges, but travels too far off (used !hitTest, don't know any other way). Added 3 other tiles. Next, I will try to add the cape and the timer item, as well as add a win dialogue if you get the star.

Well, it's been a while, hasn't it?

Star Tower is on hold until Late July or August. Currently attempting a MOTS (Multiplayer Online Tank Shooter). If that works out, I may make a multiplayer editor with Super Mario War tiles, something like the game Everybody Edits. However, Star Tower should still be done by 2013 at the latest.

UPDATE: Computer hard drive failure. Spent all this time redoing all my games. I'll be working on this game for the next couple months, I should have the start page, level select page, and 50 working levels soon.

Update: Working on level editor with BL API. 3/5 enemies completed (Need paragoomba, paratroopa). Added a couple new tiles and the timer item (no timer yet). I work now, so this may take a while to be done. However, you can always check progress on here:
