Board Additions + Fate of 72dpiarmy
« on: January 04, 2010, 10:49:24 AM »
Hey there, being the newly appointed forum owner, I took a few liberties and upgraded phpBB3, as well as installing a new skin. If I feel bored and experimental, I might even go ahead and see where I can go with a few phpBB mods as well, if I find any that are useful/interesting. Don't hold your breath though.

As it stands, I kinda hijacked the forum from Florian, even though he had died, god bless his soul. What I did was pretty akin to stealing and I shouldn't have done it. This became apparent when I got contacted by the new owner of 72dpiarmy.com, someone who apparently knew him and intends on keeping the domain, along with Florian's other one, geeq.at, alive and maintained. The server was not actually in any danger, despite what had happened. Still though, the forum is here now, and I've decided that it's here to stay.

With that said, good luck to them and hopefully they can sort things out. In meantime, I'm going to take this chance to ask you, the forum, something. The projects that Florian had been working on are all of...indeterminate status. Their fate as of right now, is very unknown. It's up to anyone who would have the available source code, but even that is unknown in itself. Even so, though, the boards used for discussing them here are likely of no use anymore. Later on, I will archive these boards and tuck them away. In their place, I wanted to know if it would be alright to house a board or two for projects I myself have that might warrant it. I can think of one upcoming one that could use one. So soon after Florian's death though and on the very ground he raised this community and his projects up...I thought it might be a little insulting to him. I'm nowhere near his capability but some people here know I have a similar goal that he once had, so it was inevitable I'd be following in his footsteps, somewhat.

Regardless of that, stay tuned as there might be another board coming up either way. I'll poke the staff once more about it and then start setting things up. Hopefully my knowledge of the phpBB3 admin panel hasn't lost it's touch. God damn those energy tanks.

With all that said, I'm glad to be your new head admin from here on out. Hopefully I can get in to contact with Two52...sometime...this century. We'll see. We know the SVN is in no danger itself now, so people are still welcome to check it up and grab the source code to Super Mario War if they ever need it for any reason. Enjoy your stay here at 72.

~JJ

Florian's vision of 72dpiarmy was a thriving community of creators and collection of free community driven projects.  I think he would applaud you starting a new project, as long as it shared the same open source, freeware vision.

I believe the old projects forums should be kept as long as somebody continues them.

Oh of course, I started believing in this concept a while ago actually. I have another open source freeware project in the works, but I don't feel it's quite big enough to deserve a board. The upcoming one on the other hand is pretty ambitious so I thought it'd be prudent to try and get a small community following during it's development.

Thanks a ton, Two52.

First new board addition is up. Look for it in the Arts Board.

I hope someone who manages 72dpiarmy.com now redirects the forum link to the new sub-domain.

Also, since you're talking about open-source, a few weeks back behind the scenes I had made an offer to Two52 to make a more accessible SVN for those who are interested in open-source software. After a few PM's between Two52 and I, I created a Google Code page for Super Mario War. Seeing other projects flourish under Google's service made it apparent to me that if other projects got a boost from Google Code, why not SMW? Below is a link to the page, at the moment it's not much, but I feel that after Two52 ties the Subversion to it and more people become aware of it, the Google Code page will become very useful. Enjoy.

At the moment only Two52 and I are administrators of the page, if you feel you should be added, please let me or Two52 know so we can add your email to the appropriate fields. (Owner, Committer, or Contributor)
We've actually been meaning to announce this to you guys a long time ago.

Thanks for posting this message.  I had forgotten I still needed to upload the source to google code.  I have checked everything in and you can check it out via SVN from this address: http://supermariowar.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/

That is an SVN url to check out the code.  You can read the checkout instructions here: http://http://code.google.com/p/supermariowar/source/checkout

And I removed the 's' from https in the previous post for anonymous access.
