Title: NEW MEMBERS ASK YOUR QUESTIONS HERE ABOUT ANYTHING
Post by: Yoshi Skier on June 10, 2008, 07:36:45 PM
MC Jimmy and I thought it would be a great idea, seeing the influx of new members joining recently, to create a thread where new members can shamelessly ask reasonable questions about the forum. Whether it be about the different subforums here or different abbreviations, we will do the best we can to answer your questions. Dumb/spam questions will be removed, so don't try screwing around with us.

Upgraded to announcement, considering a global.

Sometimes abbreviations are used in the forums in a 4chan style, so here's a heads up on what the more common ones are:

/b3/, Blah^3 - Blah Blah Blah
/fc/ - Fanmade Content
/gd/ - General Discussion
/ab/ - Arts Board
/eee/ - Etc Etc Etc

As you can see, they use the first letters of the name of the forum. So if you see something like.. oh, I dunno.. /smw/, then that would mean Super Mario War forum.

Also, these abbreviations don't necessarily need the slashes, so keep that in mind.

.. just thought I'd add that ahead of time.

Also note the the Blah Blah Blah section itself has different ways of saying it, these are common:
B3, Blah^3, BBB, Blah[sup:6dswmm0m]3[/sup:6dswmm0m], Blah.
Just to name a few.

Or "/ee/", minus the quotes.

No. /ee/ stands for Everything Else, which is the older /eee/ (Etc Etc Etc) before merging again.

..As in, previously there were 5 boards: Games Discussion, Cool Links, Forum Games, Arts Board, and 'Everything Else', since those didn't go that well 72 went for merging Games Discussion, Cool Links, and the (very few) nice bits of /ee/ into "General Discussion", which is our /gd/ now, keeping the Arts Board intact, and taking all of /ee/'s crap and shaping it into /eee/, but mostly archiving it. Forum Games was killed, too, sometime previous to the merge.

Maybe three different phases would explain it better

1. blah^3 (all discussion went into this one)

2. Split into:
 /gd/ (Games Discussion)
 /cl/ (Cool Links)
 /fg/ (Forum Games) (killed off)
 /ab/ (Arts Board)
 /ee/ (Everything Else)
(At one point also "lolwut", which was a failed attempt at creating a forum dedicated to spam so that /ee/ would be nicer, but not worth mentioning)

3. Merged into:
 /gd/ (General Discussion)
 /ab/ (Arts Board)
 /eee/ (Etc Etc Etc)

Edit: ..But really, you don't have to know this <:

Many times you might here certain names on this forum. Such as, "Jarviar","Mechasomething","Dorino",etc. These people are infamous members of 72 (72dpiarmy) that have been known for certain reasons. Of course, most of them are banned.

in case you guys didn't see this in the announcements forum, then these are all the administrators
Florian
Two52
Jared
LKA
JJames19119
Big JM
Ylle
the ones in red are the higher up admins, and florian is important because he made the forum and is the head administrator.

For extra convenience, I have adjusted the color placement to match the level of activity on the forums.  The admins in red check on the forums semi-regularly and(omg) actually post.

Welcome Red Warrior, to 72dpi. This is a small community established to assist Florian in his goal of making the best freeware game ever. It works like most other internet bulletin boards, and as such, it has rules and regulations. The staff-approved rules can be found here, but there's a couple of topics they miss.

1. If you ever see someone mention a name such as "Jarviar", "dorino", or "francis_aubry", and it sounds like this person is making fun of any of these names, this is simply that person enjoying the fact that he hasn't been kicked out of 72dpi yet. It's not very harmful, as most of the time, names like this reference certain members here that didn't exactly do what they could have done. The same goes for any sort of mention to names such as "lolwut", "/eee/", or "power-abusive mods". Again, it is simply the person enjoying the fact that he didn't have much to do with "it", that is, "it" getting out of control. Not that he's entirely safe, though.

The name "Touhou" is an exemption from the above rule. Apparently this forum can't stand that 4 members of the place enjoy some game that most of this forum refuses to play, and the forum constantly badgers the 4 or so individuals about it. The fact that these 4 members are also 72dpi staff members, and are an important part of what the forum is really about (i.e. Super Mario War), doesn't really help much. In short, the majority of the forum is just jealous. (But don't forget that Touhou itself is abused... I'd love to tell you more...)

2. Remember to always read every other post in a topic, to avoid repeating something that someone else has already said. Not only that, but you may even learn something you normally wouldn't have known otherwise.

3. Though this was covered in the rules, I thought I could explain it better here. Never ever feed the troll. This means that when a certain member enjoys name-calling, spamming, and other acts of idiocy, and decides to let the forum know about it, leave well enough alone and get out of there. The staff can handle it just fine, and you'll probably get in trouble for biting back anyway. And don't try to stop it either, that could be worse. "Violence for violence" is just a phrase, not what you should do, not what you should do here anyway. That does mean you can spam some other forum you and him both go to; spam his e-mail inbox if you have to take any sort of anger out.

4. If anyone says your Super Mario War content is crap, get a staff member. And PrintScreen the post or private message, as that's the proof the event happened. Upload that picture somewhere, such as imageshack or Picoodle!, take the hotmail link the website gives you, and send that to the staff in a PM. Any staff should do, but it's preferred that you send it to one of the active admins; this is for speed purposes. That is, don't send it to Florian or Two52, send it LKA or BigJM.

I think that's everything. If you ever have any questions, you can either post in this thread, or you can e-mail me at literalgameboy@gmail.com.

Note: The excessive use of "he" and "him" is for the sake of simplicity. That and the fact that someone here will go on and on about how we don't have any female members and drag this topic to 3 unnecessary pages, when they can't always tell for sure... idiots...

I'd like to point out that JJames is semi active, he just doesn't post often. Further more, I think it's safe to say that if anyone having problems can even PM a moderator about the problem. Even if the moderator is for a specific forum such as the case with Mr. Mister, Yoshi Skier, Me, King Pepe, Alex, Booman, and Mad Scienstein...they can still help out by given a person a warn or PM about a problem.

Also offtopic. There are plenty of memebers that like Touhou, like me, but aren't obsessive about it. Not just a few as you say. :P

Compared to the amount of members we have, I give you all 4%-5%. Probably less. Don't forget the loli-obsessed nutjobs that don't actually play the games.

Does it give you a 505 error? If yes, it's the server's error and you can contact Tiptup300 about that.

Well, has it happened to the site before? How long does it normally take to fix? It's been going on for a few days for me, and there's some stuff I wanna download, so it'd really help if you told me so I can look forward to it being fixed. :D

Why everybody tends to create 16x16 characters instead of 32x32 chars if the game supports that res?

B3 = Blah Blah Blah. Thus, they moderate that part. 72dpi is the site's name itself.

2) FEMALE USERS ON 72DPI? AAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA maybe one or two.

you forgot why 72.
that is because 72 dpi is the normal graphics setting on most monitors.

also the full name is 72DPIArmy, which basically is an army of computer geeks who know what 72dpi is.

Did the SMW creator program the whole game engine?
Title: Re: NEW MEMBERS ASK YOUR QUESTIONS HERE ABOUT ANYTHING
Post by: SsF on November 07, 2008, 05:13:09 PM
technically it was an old forum. it really was just a change to phpbb3 from 2.  That change got rid of a lot of custom skins that some user (including me) liked to use. But this will only be the format of the forum for so long, because Florian, the founder of SMWar and the forum, is working on a new thing called BlahBlah, which will become the new forum for us.

also for your second question, i do not know for sure, but i do know that there are more than just one person working on the game nowadays, but mainly it is Two52, one of the founding administers, who is coding the game, while the others just port it over (thanks to jim for helping me with that ;) ) . When it was first made, however, i don't have a clue about the number of people working on it and whether they made an entirely new code for the game or built off the old Mario War, which is what this game was made after.

Recently discovered this series, but have a question...

Is this recent 1.8 edition entirely Halloween related...

...Or...

...is it just the latest release with the most up to date gameplay that was released around Halloween which also includes some holiday content?

Thank you in advance for any help.

The true most recent 1.8 release can be found here. (http://http://forum.72dpiarmy.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=8843)

What you are talking about is the Halloween mod made by several members of the forum, which just happened to have post 1.8 beta 1 code in it. The Halloween mod is not an official beta release (if it was, it would be in the Super Mario War forum, not fanmade content).

So the Halloween edition is the official release with everything modified into a Halloween theme?
No, it isn't.

To clarify, volzzilla, the Halloween edition is a mod to the actual game, containing changes to the graphics, sound, etc. Version 1.8 was released separately, and the Halloween was released as a mod for smw.

I'm using 1.7, and it's always worked fine...but just recently I got a whole bunch of maps from here, and now it crashes at the level select screen.  It seems to only happen on specific levels - for example, when I press right when at "Abandoned Castle (fixed)", or left at "Yarg".  Going into thumb view, it crashes when I try to leave the first page.

I'm assuming I just got some corrupted maps or something, but don't know what to do about it.  I'm on Windows XP, if that matters, and it's just the basic "illegal operation needs to close etc" message.

I wish I could say exactly what I dl'd from here, but I'm not sure, I was just kind of clicking on whatever looked interesting...a few individual maps, the 72dpi Best Map Collection, and I also imported the maps from Super Mario Warld.  Could that be it?

Mega thanks for any help.

Because the maps from here are only 1.8 beta compatibile.
if your looking for 1.7-1.7 AFE content go to the 1.7 section of Fanmade Content..

Well, I'm pretty sure a lot of the 72dpi Best Map Collection contains 1.8-only compatible maps, and were you downloading those individual maps from the old 1.7 board or the current open Fanmade Content board?
So, I guess your best bet would be to just download the 1.8 Beta, or redownload 1.7 if you're dead set on using 1.7.

Okay, this has nothing to do with Super Mario War, but with the forum.
If the typed text reaches a random length while posting a reply or making a new topic, the text field shakes like crazy. The effect is even stronger if the post is really long. :x
Other than that, if the text is too long, the BBCode buttons let the text scroll up if you hover over them.
Is there a way to avoid these problems?
Or does anybody else have them?
Because I don't want to have a shaking field disturbing the reply.

Putting tilesets in posts?
That's easy.
Choose one size (large, medium or small) of the tileset you want to present and upload it to Imageshack or Tinypic (for example). You'll get the direct image link soon.
Then, put it in the post using the IMG code.
(http://Link_to_the_image)

And you're done.

What files are in the folder you created for the tileset and what filetype are they?
The only thing that can work is large.png, medium.png and small.png, also make sure the tile sizes are 32 (for large), 16 (for medium) and 8 (for small).

I won't be able to tell you about the Wii port (we don't take care of it here), but you do have to use the other players' controls to change CPU skins for regular computer ports.

Change directory to where you want the source downloaded, then get it with:

svn co svn://svn.72dpiarmy.com/smw

change directory into the folder (should be called smw) and configure, make, and make install:

./configure
make
sudo make install
then you can just run super mario war with the command
smw

But I don't get the ./configure part. Please help

Alright, know everyone's probably tired of talking about it here, but if all goes well this should be the last time it's brought up.
Is there an actual designated place to talk about the SMW Wii port? Not necessarily with Tantric (or whoever it was that ported it, thanks to them at any rate), though that would be a plus, but at the very least with people more familiar with the homebrew scene and other people playing the port?
I noticed eeliot had a sticky up about it, should we be hijacking that one with questions and concerns or making a brand new topic to discuss it?

Steps i have attempted to get the svn to compile on Kubuntu linux.

sudo apt-get install subversion build-essential libsdl1.2-dev libsdl1.2-dev libsdl-mixer1.2-dev libsdl-image1.2-dev libpng12-dev tofrodos

(used sudo -i to become root so all the following commands where ran as root)

cd /usr/src/
svn checkout https://supermariowar.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/ (https://supermariowar.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/)
cd trunk/
chmod +x configure

(at this point i tried to run ./configure got a error. google searched it and found it to be a problem with the way linux sees
the return char so i ran)

fromdos configure
./configure

(Attempted to run make here but got a error (_src/FileList.cpp:57: error: ‘transform’ is not a member of ‘std’)
A little bit of google told me that this is due to a missing include so i)

nano _src/FileList.h

(below the #include <srting> line added #include <algorithm>)

make

(got another error _src/map.cpp:631: error: invalid conversion from ‘const char*’ to ‘char*’)
(after some more Google found that i needed to add const to this line)

nano _src/map.cpp

(added const to beginning of line 631)

make

(yet another error _src/path.cpp:99: error: ‘strcpy’ was not declared in this scope
_src/path.cpp:107: error: ‘strcat’ was not declared in this scope)
(more google found this to be another missing include)

nano _src/path.cpp
(added #include <cstring>)

make

(ok one step closer i think but yet another error

_src/ai.cpp:348: error: no match for ‘operator=’ in ‘itr = ((CPlayerAI*)this)->CPlayerAI::attentionObjects.std::map<_Key, _Tp, _Compare, _Alloc>::erase [with _Key = int, _Tp = AttentionObject*, _Compare = std::less<int>, _Alloc = std::allocator<std::pair<const int, AttentionObject*> >](itr)’
/usr/include/c++/4.4/bits/stl_tree.h:154: note: candidates are: std::_Rb_tree_iterator<std::pair<const int, AttentionObject*> >& std::_Rb_tree_iterator<std::pair<const int, AttentionObject*> >::operator=(const std::_Rb_tree_iterator<std::pair<const int, AttentionObject*> >&)

so i look at the code at this line and i am not understanding this error.

line 338: //Expire attention objects
line 339: std::map<int, AttentionObject*>::iterator itr = attentionObjects.begin(), lim = attentionObjects.end();
line 340: while(itr != lim)
line 341: {
line 342: if(itr->second->iTimer > 0)
line 343: {
line 344: if(--(itr->second->iTimer) == 0)
line 345: {
line 346: delete itr->second;
line 347:
line 348: itr = attentionObjects.erase(itr);
line 349: lim = attentionObjects.end();
line 350: }
line 351: }
line 352:root#

line 353: ++itr;
line 354: }

This looks to be a just a simple loop calling the function attentionObjects.erase and passing the value of the iterations of the loop but it has been a while since i have programmed in C so i am not sure what is going on with this section or why i am getting this error when i try to compile.

Any help with this would be appreciated

Thanks.

If I wanted to track major updates to SMW, where should I head? This is such a large forum, and I'm looking for the bugfix release of SMW 1.8.

As far as I know, there's a text file somewhere in the music folder (just search for it). It contains the music files to be played in each category -- Snow, Land, Bonus etc.

Place the path of your files you want to appear in SMWar (note that it must be in .MP3 or .OGG format) within the categories.

In order to test those, pick a map using the music category where you put your music to (if you have Next Song disabled, you can press Tab to cycle through the songs).

Too large? So do I have to
a) give rid of some songs or
b) edit them?

Unfortunately, you may want to try pulling a few songs out first. Try to experiment with it for a bit and maybe even compare the songs you have to the same songs, but in .mp3 format. Some of your songs could be riddling the other songs and causing your error. Maybe even try some new songs, let me know if you come up with anything. Also, it would probably be easier to help if you could give the names (or links) of your songs. (You don't have to though if you don't want to, you might be saving them as a surprise  :P  .)

Ok. I'll run through the songs sometime today (or tomorrow if i'm feeling especially lazy) and see if i can figure out what the problem is.

Edit: June 21, 2010. I've started finding downloads for your songs, (unfortunately I have none of them.) But i'll be away for the next 2-3 days at a sleepover birthday party (not mine) so don't expect the results soon. (sorry :? )

Edit 2: June 22. Found all the downloads, testing now.. (got back early, too many people had to go home  :cry: .)

Ok, I went through most of your songs and was surprised at how they came out in-game (both .ogg and .mp3 formats.)
Here's what it sounds like in-game: http://http://www.mediafire.com/?jd3mgzkmf2g
And here's what it's supposed to sound like: http://http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_tUBK0zUpSs
From my perspective, the game seems to accelerate the music speed (doubling, maybe tripling the speed of the song, which is kind of funny on some of the songs :lol: .) This is a serious problem that needs to be examined. I imagine other people have had this problem too, although i've never seen anyone say they have.

Note: I recorded the song (the messed up version) with an audio recorder. (Sorry it's a download, but youtube was giving me a hard time with uploading it.

I had posted this many times in multiple tpoics, but then again, It's in the frequency in the mp3....22050 Hz plays it just fine.

It's integrated in the world mode in beta 2.

But there,s some "cheat codes" you have to enter to get to it in beta 1.

Go into the level editor and open the level you want to put those things in. Press [K] over a ? block, a note block, a bounce block or a flip block and choose what you want the block to be.

I have a question about adding backgrounds.

I made one, I saved it in the "backgrounds" folder, it fits the resolution, and when it saved, it changed to "Battle_xxxx". It's not in the level editor background select. Where should it appear, or is something wrong?

Well First Make Sure Its a PNG File, Second Rename It, Put The Name After The "Battle_" Part Cause Thats The Music Half, Third Make Sure Its In The Classic Pack Because Its The Main System... If It Still Doesent Work It Could Be Invalid, Corrupt, or Interlaced [Idk If Interlaced Affects It]
If It Was Made In Photoshop It Might Not Work, Open It In Paint on a Pc n Save It, But Before You Try These, Open The Editor again n Hover Your Mouse Over The Black Space On The Last Maps, The Thumbnail Might Be Blank

And then it deletes it. Is there anything I can do about it?

I hope this isn't a stupid question but where do I ask about maps that don't work? Because I found 7 (Well, 6 if don't count the SLIGHT graphical error I found in one of the levels *I'm missing another graphics pack I can't seem to find for it.*.).

Oh, I'm running the game on Windows 7 & I have Super Mario War v1.8 Beta 2. I got the game working by setting the Compatability Setting (You know, the option that forces Windows 7 to run the game on a different OS other than Windows 7 *I believe I chose XP or Vista*.)

Here's the list of levels that won't work (If it's okay, I mean):
Volcano Of Ice
Syobon Action Stage 1-1
Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum
NES Mario Head <-----The one with the graphical problem (This level DOES Work)
Birthday Cake
IceCap7
Fourside

To NegaChomp:

Well, what I did was take the last tileset (The Yoshi's Island tileset) and add on my own tiles to that. To do this, go to "gfx", then "packs", then "classic", then "tilesets", then "YoshisIsland". Open up the "big" tileset and add in your tiles. I don't remember though if you also have to add it into the medium and small tilesets. Hope this helped! :D
