Title: R.I.P. Florian Hufsky, 1986~2009
Post by: Agastya on December 17, 2009, 07:53:00 PM
While some of us heard about it in the morning, we were just now able to confirm it..

http://florianhufsky.soup.io/ (http://florianhufsky.soup.io/)
http://metalab.at/ (http://metalab.at/)

.. I really don't have much more I can say. This is just.. crushing. I barely knew him, but now I wish I took more time to try to know him, considering that if it wasn't for him, we probably all wouldn't be together on this board.

Anyway, considering this, it's not exactly the best time to say it but.. now the forums have to be moved as well. No telling when it'll happen, but once the hosts get word, it'll go down faster than you can imagine.

I don't know what to say about it, it's just...  heartbreaking
And you're right, nobody would be here without Flo

I don't think even Super Mario War would be here without Flo. Tigsource's community has said this was a great loss to the indie game community. He influenced a lot of people, including us.

Hats off to you, Florian. May the angels guide you to that big green mushroom in the sky.

It's so sad that he's gone. But I hope the progress of Super Mario War (and/or Puit Wars) will still continue.

We'll miss you Florian, all your efforts in making SMWar are appreciated very much...

Horrible news indeed.

From the times I've actually seen him around IRC, and this forum, he was a cool guy.

I wish for the best to his family and friends, and I hope that all his projects will still have strong support.

This really just sucks. We're going to miss you Florian. ; ;

You will be remembered wherever this community goes.

The only time I ever had any contact with him was IRC sometimes but it was really rare, but it still saddens me.

However, there's one quote of his that really got stuck in my head:
Quote from: "Florian"
the music in the menu is wrong. instead of the classic super mario war tune, it's some weird porno-esque shiggy-shiggy remix. wtf?

Rest in peace, man.

Like most of the people here, I have not known much about flo and i havn't talked to him much, either, except for some small conversations on msn...

and also, like most of the people here, the fact that he's dead now has left me in shock and disbelieve.

We would not be here without flo, I owe him all the countless hours I spend in this forum, this community and of course in super mario war, may it be playing the game or creating content.

Flo, i whish that you would still be here, but i hope that you are on a better place now.

A great mind and creative person left our world. my best wishes to his family and friends.

My experience of learning this goes as follows:
-On forum main page
-Refresh
-Notice
-

I think everyone is going to miss that guy for all he did. But the worst part being, what will happen with the Puit Wars stuff? It never really was released (unless I missed it), so the community has nothing. I would say that some of us should collect to continue it, but what would we start with other then the screenshots?
And just to note, is there anything on how he died?
R.I.P. Flo

I didn't know anything about Florian, just that he made the whole Super Mario War and was developing Puit Wars, a would-be awesome game.
When I came again to the site today(school and other stuff didn't let me get on earlier), I was like "WTF?", and now I know that a great game maker died. The worst is, it was right in the Christmas season. :(

Let's remember the day he died, and in that day we will remember what Florian Hufsky left us.
Two. Awesome. Games.

My previous post didn't get moved over, so... It's sad, not only that a man with the creative genius that he had decided to end his life, but that he probably didn't realize how many people admired the work he did. If only he knew what he meant to here and to the many communities that he has touched over the years. I hope he can find the peace he's looking for. He will be (and is) sorely missed.

It is very depressing how a great mastermind of Super Mario War and a great leader of 72dpiarmy, Florian Hufsky, has passed away. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family, friends, and the rest of 72dpiarmy. May Florian Hufsky rest in peace.

One question: How will his profile be memorialized if this forum survives?

I can't say I knew Florian much, but from what I've heard/read he was a great guy. Truly sucks that people like him have to go so early in their lives.

For us, he brought Super Mario War, and that earns good respect from me.

As they say, an picture is worth a thousand words though; I think this describes better than words my (and I guess all your) feelings towards this:

I found out about this game while he was still alive, but registered after his death. :?

Rest in Peace, Florian Hufsky. Although I never knew you and you never knew me, I feel very sorry because everyone considered you as a great friend, and I know that you have connected so many people and that you have left a great masterpiece behind you - a game called Super Mario War.
You will never be forgotten and your work will always live.

How did he die, anyway? From the details I was able to fish up, it seems like he committed suicide, but I just want to clarify.

I have "known" Florian since 2003.  I emailed him after I found a homebrew game for my xbox called "Super Mario War 1.1".  I had played the game and it was so much fun, that being a fellow coder, I wanted to contribute.  The game didn't have powerups yet, for pete's sake :)

My first impression of Florian was he was this energetic young coder that was full of ideas.  He wanted to build and contribute to the free gaming community.  He had this idea to create a website called "72dpiarmy.com" (72 dpi being the typical dots per inch on a display) where he wanted to build a community of developers, game designers and players to create free fun games.  He wanted SMW to be the first game released under this community.

I went to work adding features to SMW.  We would have email exchanges discussing features and implementation details.  He showed me his work creating the Jump and Run tutorials http://http://jnrdev.72dpiarmy.com/ and how SMW used those concepts.  The first powerup added to the game was the starman.  Then a turbo button was added.  He argued we didn't need a turbo button and wanted to keep it simple.  I told him he didn't have to use it :)  He created a CVS repository that we could use to collaborate.

Eventually we had enough features that we thought it was time to cut a version.  Florian thought we should have a forum for people to discuss and contribute to the game so he created forum.72dpiarmy.com.  I didn't think anyone would use it, but he was a believer.  Boy was I wrong.  We decided on 1.5 as the version number and released it to the community for PC, Mac and xbox.  It became crazy popular.  People flooded the forum and began contributing maps and skins.  Tons and tons of them.  Also feature requests.  Feature requests that became version 1.6, 1.7 and 1.8.

Talented contributors began to show up and smw started building a loose team.  Rom hackers, music and sound composers, map makers, document and html writers, graphic artists, platform porters.  It was becoming a "real" open source project.  I could see Florian smiling through his emails.

He would send me links to articles or scans of magazines mentioning SMW.  He would update me on traffic spikes where popular sites would post a link to our download and we'd get 10,000 downloads a day.  Florian was featured on an episode of Gamejew http://http://blawg.72dpiarmy.com/?p=261.  He was inspired by the success and started other projects, including Puit.  In his last email to me, he was planning the redesign of the SMW website to coincide with the 1.8 release.  I guess I should have released it a little quicker. :)

You can read his blog here: http://http://blawg.72dpiarmy.com
His geeq page: http://http://soup.geeq.at/
Puit on soup: http://http://puit.soup.io/
SMW on soup: http://http://smw.soup.io/

Rest in peace, Florian.  Your friendship, unique vision and our conversations will truly be missed.

I'll leave you with this: http://http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S3eOIFo_Hrg

I know I should of posted a big sob-worthy group of paragraphs probably when I first posted in this thread but I mind as well get it out of the way now, if you are expecting trolling and otherwise looking for lulz in this post then please kill yourself now and say hi to Florian for me.

Florian was mostly a shrouded mystery for a great chunk of the entire forum, most of us knew him "as that guy with the hat that made the forums and super mario war" but reading through Two52's post made me think "gee this guy really is a bro, and he and Two52 are bros forever." I have to personally thank Florian for bring together this (mostly) great rag-tag team of great people (http://http://72dpiarmy.supersanctuary.net/memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&u=19) I never would (http://http://72dpiarmy.supersanctuary.net/memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&u=227) of met in (http://http://72dpiarmy.supersanctuary.net/memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&u=1605) the first (http://http://72dpiarmy.supersanctuary.net/memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&u=480) place without (http://http://72dpiarmy.supersanctuary.net/memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&u=409) Super Mario War (http://http://72dpiarmy.supersanctuary.net/memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&u=955).

Super Mario War has really come a long way since 2006, when the forum was in a state which I perfectly fittingly call "The Golden Age" of 72dpiarmy, yeah the forum had it's ups and downs but mostly banded together complete strangers due to one common thing: "we love mario and shit yeah!"

So I guess that's all I really do have to type, I never knew Florian personally, but he did a pretty good thing and we should be thankful, if it wasn't for him we probably would of never known each other and probably have no friends at all.

In conclusion:

I never had the time to post on this topic. Might as well do it now.

I have spoken to Florian only once. And that was in the IRC. He was really nice, too. I should have spoken more with him, but who knew that he would die of Suicide?
He created a community which changed my life. Entirely, even. Why? Well i used to have no friends (echo get out of here), irl and in the internet. Today, I have (http://http://72dpiarmy.supersanctuary.net/memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&u=19) a (http://http://72dpiarmy.supersanctuary.net/memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&u=126) load (http://http://72dpiarmy.supersanctuary.net/memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&u=227) of (http://http://72dpiarmy.supersanctuary.net/memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&u=409) friends (http://http://72dpiarmy.supersanctuary.net/memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&u=480) that (http://http://72dpiarmy.supersanctuary.net/memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&u=955) are (http://http://72dpiarmy.supersanctuary.net/memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&u=1564) true (http://http://72dpiarmy.supersanctuary.net/memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&u=1605)
bros (http://http://72dpiarmy.supersanctuary.net/memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&u=213). Who is the one that made us know each other? This guy (http://http://72dpiarmy.supersanctuary.net/memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&u=2).

This makes me remember of the old times i was here. 2006. 2nd community i went to. Zash, Aubry, Jarviar, Nights and Chaos, WAD Master, those were the good times. My true internet life started here. Metanet was just a preview of what the internet showed me in the next years. Let's not forget the good times we had on IRC. We have evolved and are currently chatting on Skype (well, for the most of us who used IRC). I'm still having a great time in this community, always did, always will. We play games a lot, share cool stories with us bros and always laugh at every day. I have changed since my debut in this community. I owe all of this to Florian, the true bro of 72dpi. 2009 was a bad year for celebrities, i guess you counted as one of them.

Florian might be dead, but the community will live on until the end of time (or until the internet dies).
We won't for get you.
Ever.

I never knew the guy, but knowing what he has done for this community, for us, I know how much it hurts to learn that he died. But I know that this community can progress. And I'm hoping that SMW will become something Florian would be proud of...

Rest in peace...

What?
Well... damn...
This is terrible.
My condolences to his family and friends.

from what it looks like the forums is going down the drain because since he died nobody has been logged on, WE NEED TO REVIVE THE FORUMS. also if we can get somebody to help out with the SMW beta 2 and finishing the game it would be just what we would need to get more people back and active on the forums and ir pains me to say that about one of the best mario forums. Idiot post in the quote above this text. No flame intended, but there's no need to revive the forums. They aren't     , it's just a case of if people are willing to pay attention. Sure, the forums aren't as active, but they're not     .

The inactivity on the forums is due in part to the lack of advertising of said and the molasses pace of SMWar updates. I have absolutely no money or time to do the former and I'm not in charge of the latter, so there is little I myself can do about it.

I wouldn't worry too much about inactivity. Summer is coming up and all the kids get off school for three months. I think it's about time for a new 72dpi generation to show up.

EDIT: Also, I'd like to remind you guys that we do have a Google Code page for Super Mario War (http://http://code.google.com/p/supermariowar/), although it's a bit inactive itself at the moment, Two52 has given at least 1 revision to the beta 2 code.

Well that's good seeing update lists of the game before it actually comes out.

Oh my goodness. I come back after a couple years and now see what has happened.

Man.

How did he die?
I knew him kinda, we would shoot emails back and forth occasionally...
He was an awesome guy.

That's really depressing.

One word, SUICIDE

when is the 1.8 final version going to be released and can they make it so that people can put in new game items? like things from an item boss? they can still update it but if you can add items then that might attract a lot more people to smw. >:)  :)

That's unknown, be patient, you have to wait.

Also, don't double post within a short time period. It makes things like whoa.
Just edit your previous post to avoid such, and be happy. [/sarcasm]

one more quicky to add to that... this thread is not about the game in any way, it is about a man who has made this place what it is today and remembering him. Please take your questions about the game into the forum it is designated for.

Agreed. This is for discussing the event of Florian Hufsky's      , which, might I say, is not exactly a pleasent subject.
