Title: SMW 1.8 Beta 2 Secret Features

Here is the list of secret features that have been found so far.  We can just keep them here so we a single place to find them.

Beta 1:
Minigame menu - To unlock: on the game type select screen, press up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, random, random, random (not any random button, but THE random button) and a special minigame game type will appear

Beta 2:
Dizzy Mode - To unlock: 5 kills in a row without dying by different two players, and 3 ice block kills
Moonwalk Mode - To unlock: ???
Wind Mode - To unlock: ???
??? - To unlock: ???

MUCH BETTER!!! also the sledgys act normal in minigame mode then in world mode where they all are hammer brothers.

Ha, you're right.  There is no turbo button when navigating menus! :)  Fixed.

I Unlocked Wind On the War Map  (Named War) It Was Crazy, I tell YOu, It Was Stomp So You Think You're gonna get this koopa, Wind Changes and you miss right in front of it, and you get totally pwned   =.=...

Random button? Which one is that? Because if I can't get to minigames mode, this Beta 2 version is mostly rendered useless to me, the newest content is the content I can't get to like this.

I think it's unlocked by repeatedly killing opponents with the Ice Wand.

5 kills in a row without dying, then, 3 ice block kills, or you can combine your ice block kills with those. 4matsy figured this out a while ago.

1 Down Three To Go! Also Before i got moonwalk, i had gotten, ice wand, boomerang, hammer, and fire flower. that might narrow it down a bit.

EDIT: Looks Like We May Have Caught the colored orbs!  :D

apparently, there are 4 known secrets (5, if you count the minigame secret).

i unlocked wind mode many times but i don't know how to do it.
[spoilers:ym2lrffo](unfortunately, i haven't noticed the way i stomp those bots to unlock this secret
since i usually play on maps with no item boxes.)
and i'm not sure if this have to do with a kuribo shoe.[/spoilers:ym2lrffo]

Yes, I unlocked the Wind On War Stage with stomp. so maybe it's a consecutive-kill-Unlock like in 1.7 where you would kill things with hammers so maybe it's like that without the hammers. just try only putting ONE type of enemy and see which ones you unlock the secret on. then it will determine if it's an enemy or a combo.

It seems to be an aerial consecutive-kill on bots. The only question: How?
I tried it about 15-30 times, but suddenly, a (?) orb appeared (Wind Mode).

So that's why i always unlocked wind mode because i also broke those brick blocks,
5 or more, i guess. (2 consecutive aerial kills by 2 different players plus destroying 5 brick blocks)
As for the moonwalk mode, i haven't found a pattern for it yet, maybe items are related to this.

YES! Items! That MUST be the way to unlock because I only made kills with fire flower,hammer,bombs, ice wand and red and blue throw blocks.

but then again, it could bey a control sequence (say maybe like left right turbo turbo down jump. or something)

Yeah, items may be the answer. I guess its getting the 5 (or something) specific items
then using them against the bots. Moonwalk seems weird because you fire backwards.
I'm not sure if its 5 projectile item kills plus 3 throw block kills by two different players.

FOUND HOW TO DIZZY MODE ( Green Orb) It has to do with ice wand blue throw block bombs and stomps. Although I bet it is somewhere between 5 and 10 consecutive kils with no deaths yourself.

EDIT: Status Report (lol)
Red Orb:Wind:2 players with 2 consecutive kiklls in stomp and break 5 bricks.
Blue OrbYellow Orb:???
Yellow Orb:Moonwalk : Irem kill unlock
Green Orb:Dizzy Mode:5-10consecutive ice wand kills.

On-Topic: btw, i haven't fount any clues of unlocking the last secret
so i have to choose from these methods:

(First off, I'm a user from two years ago.  Hi.)
So, let me see if I can understand what's going on with these secrets exactly.
RED = Wind
Caused by = 2 players getting "2 kills in air" when 5 bricks have been globally broken?  (Failed to replicate)
YELLOW = Moonwalk (Why did people say this was blue?  It's yellow on this side.)
Caused by = Unknown cause.  Yellow (?) appeared while I had 5 Flower kills in a row one time.  Only things that were happening at the time were that I was holding a Blue Throw Block while bouncing on a note block and a shell was bouncing around in a one-block-wide area.  And there was only P1 Human and P2 Human, so you know.  (Intended replication method failed)
GREEN = Dizzy (moving screen)
Caused by = Chance of appearing when a player makes a kill during a kill streak of 5 or more while there are at least 3 global Wand kills.  (Replication successful)
BLUE = ?
Caused by = ?

So from what I can tell, RED and YELLOW might need to be examined a bit more as I could not easily discern how to get them, while maps that had the BLUE sphere should be checked(and named for easy acquisition).  Apologies if I'm just relaying already-known data, I only looked at this thread today.

These were the projectile items i was talking about:

That's the reason on why i suggested projectile item kills
and throw block kills for moonwalk mode.

Of course when I try to go for the Green orb it works really quickly.  Already had the five kills in a row, just had to do one more kill after the three Ice Wand kills.  :/

Restarting on a different map to get kills by the 5s using the unmentioned items...(I increased / added these as I played
11 Shell Kills + 9 POW Kills + 5 Push Kills (The Hand) + 10 "Mushroom" Kills + 9 Feather Kills + 3 Wand Kills + 12 Bomb Kills + 15 Star Kills + 5 KuriboShoe Kills + 8 Leaf Kills + 5 Hammer Kills + 6 BulletBill Kills + 5 MOd Kills (last kill) + 9 Podoboo Kills + 6 [!] Kills + 6 Bob-omb Kills + 6 Fire Flower Kill + 5 Boomerang Kills
So apparantly (to me) none of those work with each other.  :/

(And in the time it took for me to make this post it is told the Red orb takes more than five blocks + the Yellow orb still isn't known.  :/  Great...)

Well, i meant 5 (or something) kills for every projectile item. But i'm not sure though...
btw, it's killing at least two different players, not just on one, and you must not die in the game.

And Don't Forget That last one! Hey wait. play on a stage on unlimited fps, BUT! make item spawn not on bricks. or solid tiles. make it spawn where it's clear. so then we can figure out WHAT is Blue orb (Last secret) and what it does. then we start unlocking it. because you SHOULD have a name for it first.

IIRC, yellow or red, I forget which, is something along the lines of shoot about 9 or so fireballs, then bounce on a Note Block about 13 times... Though, I got it to appear BEFORE jumping 13 times... Oh, and this is without touching the floor, too, or you have to do it MORE. Well, from my testing, at least.

Ok, so apparantly it's 9 Fireballs, 5 Note Block bounces.  Do not have to spring off of said noteblock, but merely bounce.  Also note it may actually be less than 5 required, as this is all RANDOM CHANCE.  Very important.
And it's consistent, I tried bouncing on the noteblock in 0smw after firing 8 fireballs, it only came up after I fired the 9th.  Like, RIGHT after, as in a few frames after I pressed Turbo.
If you ask me, we have Moonwalk in the bag.

Good job guys.  I made the 4th and last secret intentionally hard as I think it is the best one.  I'll give you some clues:
1) It isn't unlocked the same way the others are
2) Once you know how to unlock it, you will be able to do it at your will in a couple seconds.

It MUST be something helpful like summoning bullet bills or something But Yes, it HAS to be a key combination according to the "At your will" part. so first, someone should go on a map thats entirely flat playat unlimited fps and see what the secret is. then we will figure what the combination is.

I've noticed that the combination:
Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, Random, Random, Random
Doesn't work at this case, (no Up and Random Button ingame).
So I guess we have to find another pattern related to this.
Or maybe the Item Use, Turbo, and Jump buttons can substitute.
(btw, inputting the code has to be fast.)

Addenum to the current conversation:  It is very unlikely that randomly pressing the six standard keys will work.  I tried that earlier and nothing happened.  It's also not Konami-related(duh).

...run it on a flat surface level?  I get the idea that you mean a straight stretch of land, nothing to see on it, including [?]s.  If not, suggest a map?

Yeah, a straight stretch of land but with at least 1 item box [?].

Maybe some other key combinations may work though.

Does anyone check the Super Mario War IRC channel? It's easier to talk about the secrets.

Apparently, all players have a Cancel key (used in Player Select and World mode).
I don't know if this will make any use though...

...I never was around for that one.  Don't have the 360, don't have Halo 3, thus I never even read about its inner working until six months, nine months, who knows how many months later.

At any and all rates, I know I will never figure this one out on my own.  And running four bots at unlimited FPS for 168 hours won't get me a blasted step closer to it.  :/  (Hell, I still can't get the Red secret.  How many blocks?  And midair stomp is considered what?  Even the obvious eludes me...)

Because that's what I did to try to find the Red, and it only appeared when a CPU jumped off the ground and made a kill against what looked like an enemy still on the ground.  Wait a minute...maybe I can do this with just two players in Stomp mode.  Hold on...

...ok, so you DO need Two different players to do it.  1st Test broke 15 blocks, then P1 killed 9 Goombas in a row.  When P2 killed his 2nd Goomba, bang: Red Orb.  Testing further, I killed two midair enemies as P1 right off the bat, then killed 2 midair enemies as P2.  Destroying blocks, I noticed it appear upon destruction of the 8th block.  A 2nd test supported this, so I do believe that the Red Secret is unlocked through a combination of...
1: Two players getting a double-kill (How to get a double-kill without doing it in midair?  Try throwing shells and standing still.)
2: Eight blocks must be destroyed
Once you've done this, the Red Secret is pretty quick to generate.

Sounds like an assumption to me, though.  Does it or does it not know when any given key is being pressed, regardless if it's supposed to be used in the game?  You should know what I mean by that surely.

(I haven't seen it yet, but I have two guesses of what it could be.  Reverse Gravity or No-Wrap.  Thoughts?)

And it doesn't have to be done by two different players.

Correction for your interpretation on Dizzy Mode:  Chance is when you have a 5-kill combo IF there are 3 global Wand kills.
Example 1:  P1 kills P2 with the Wand 5 times.
Example 2:  P2 kills P3 with the Wand once, P3 kills P1 with the Wand twice, P1 throws a Spiny Shell that kills both P2 and P3 five times without dying in between kills.
Example 3:  P1 kills P2 ten times in a row, then without dying kills P3 with the Wand three times.
Clear things up for you?

As for the Blue Orb, I'm not making any attempts.  There is no way I can approach this problem with successful results besides simple random button presses.

But which part of it makes it wrong?  Remember, I did say CHANCE, which means that sometimes it will be too lazy to appear.  And when you think about it, how could Ex3 fail when both Ex2 and Ex1 give a similar conclusion?  Try it again is all I can tell you.

I have tried it again. With the same result. I killed other players x times (x >= 5) and then again three times with the ice wand. Nothing. I could have waited for over an hour - nothing.
Then I just killed somebody with the ice wand again - and poof, the green :?: ball was there.
The example 1 is five kills with the ice wand. That should work in all cases.

I fail to see how fewer than three Wand kills yields the Green Orb.  Explain it step by step instead?

I cannot explain it. Now it only works with five kills and up and at least four ice wand kills, except if you do the ice wand kills by two different players and also before the normal kills. So, P1 kills P2 and P3 with the ice wand twice, P2 grabs another ice wand and kills P3 once, then P1 does three normal kills. And I got the Green Orb. :?

Reproducable. But why doesn't the game accept one of the normal kills? If I did five, and then killed the players three times with the ice wand, why does one of the kills suddenly dissapear?

I cannot reproduce it now either. I don't really know how I have got that. I just know I've started the game, chosen a map, done some kills and suddenly I saw the green orb. I remember it was four normal kills and one ice wand kill, but I'm not sure here, so I'll think it was just a mistake of me. There is no other explanation.

If you mean the secrets like you mentioned in "NEW MEMBERS ASK YOUR QUESTIONS HERE ABOUT ANYTHING":
The first secret is the Dizzy Mode, unlocked by doing five normal kills or more, at least three of them have to be ice block kills. Now a green orb will pop up.
The second secret is the Wind Mode, unlocked by two in-air-kills (the ! fireworks pop up) by two players and then destroying eight brick blocks. Now a red orb will pop up.
The third secret is the Moonwalk Mode, unlocked by shooting nine fireballs and then bouncing on a note block. After a few bounces, a yellow orb will pop up.
We don't know the last secret yet, we only know a button combination is needed to unlock it.

I've noticed that you don't have to kill a player to unlock Moonwalk Mode.
8 Fireballs + 5 Note Block Bounces (Tested on Pinball Time map thrice.).
Result: One Bot is stuck in one corner (lower left, specifically), repeatedly firing Fireballs
and bouncing on a Note Block. On the 8[sup:wi61ag1u]th[/sup:wi61ag1u] Fireball and 5[sup:wi61ag1u]th[/sup:wi61ag1u] bounce,

I didn't say that you didn't have to make a kill earlier?  Could've sworn that I did(by saying that I fired nine fireballs instead of making nine fireball kills).

Also.  How many times must I remind people that it takes Nine Fireballs instead of Eight?  I can throw eight fireballs on my copy of SMW and leave it bouncing on note blocks for a full hour, no orb's going to make an appearance unless I throw another fireball.  :/

(For reference, here (http://http://forum.72dpiarmy.com/viewtopic.php?p=189222#p189222) is where I first said it took nine fireballs, about a month ago.)

Basically, I just stood in a safe spot, while the other guy kept getting killed by the shell.
He got killed like 5 times, then I got killed a few times, the shell broke a bunch of blocks,
POOF! A red (?) orb appeared.

Funny thing is, I wasn't even trying...

I haven't encountered the blue (?) orb yet. However, I did make a simple key tracking utility that tracks the last 20 seconds of button presses/keyreleases, in case it does spawn because of button presses. The tracking is done in a similar format to the Guitar Hero games, except pressing a button and then releasing a button will create a rectangle on the button's corresponding row.

Now I just need to get to playing Super Mario War. XD

I have a question: Can bots also activate the blue (?) orb, or is it only players? If bots can activate the blue (?) orb also, then it might be more discouraging to find out that you didn't activate the orb but a bot did. I know I'd be disappointed just to see that the last 20 buttons I pressed didn't activate the blue (?) orb.

First things first: I can't get the red orb to pop up for my life. It's have 2 players get 2 consecutive kills then break 8 blocks right? Well that's not working for me.  :?:


Also, I know we've aready found out a bunch of stuff, but I've compiled some stages I made to help unlock the orbs easily.

EDIT: nevermind. Just got the red orb. I tested all my stages are they are successful at getting their respective orbs. Nothing for blue yet though.

Maybe the blue orb has to do w/ pressing all the p1 in-game buttons 3 times in a row in a certain order?

EDIT 2: It seems that; whenever the blue orb pops up, it pops up in a spot where you can't get to it. Maybe that's a clue as to how you get it?

Um... If the orb did get stuck in the item box it just falls through.
Proof, I tested some maps, then a green (?) orb got stuck in an item box due
to the throw block under it, but when the throw box is removed, the orb fell.
This also happens to the red and yellow (?) orbs,
in other words, this will possibly happen to the blue (?) orb.
And btw, unnecessary responses, like lolwut, lol rofl, etc., shouldn't be posted.

Hey, thanks Two52 for giving us the last code! :D
With help of it, I found out what the last secret is:
The whole screen turns black, only the players have a little torchlight around their character.
When they spawn, the light goes on, when they die, the light goes out.
So, I'll give it the name Torchlight Mode.

Do you run the game at a framerate other than 62?  If you're using the default framerate, you should have about 3 seconds.

Not certain. It has to be nine fireballs and eight note block bounces, as far as I know.

Strange, it was always random for me. I swear, I broke 9 YELLOW brick blocks on one round, then 6 on another, and a few other outcomes. Same went for the red (?) orb.

If you guys are having trouble fetching that Blue Orb because it keeps spawning out of reach, making every unreachable area "No Item Spawn" (press "z" in the leveleditor), it might not spawn there. Of course, I've been wrong before. >.>

Yeah but to hit on that combination specifically? I just don't see it happening, myself... ??

Besides, Mortal Kombat sucks and was basically designed for buttonmashing, because the guys who made it are horrible. They went out of business, so that's a fairly good indicator.

Oh, I dare. Armageddon and Deception were awful, awful games, and Armageddon's create-a-fighter mode sucked, and some of the weapon moves would go through opponents and not damage them. It was pure dung.

Also since you put it like that, yeah, I guess I can see how it can happen... it's still fairly unlikely but I suppose it could happen after all. :p

I tried unlocking all of them once (dang, it was almost impossible to unlock lights-out in normal FPS).
Yep, gameplay sure was crazy and dizzying, I couldn't easily see what's going on.

i ulocked all secrets:
(?) Moonwalk mode: 9 fire flower kills and more than 5 noteblocks jumps
(?) Dizzy Mode: 4 or 5 ice wand kills
(?) Wind Mode: 2 players need to get 2 in air consecutive kills and break more than 5 bricks
(?) Dark Mode: left, right, left, right, jump, jump (three times, faster)

The "???" secret is Spotlight mode. press very fast: left right left right up up x3

it make the screen like a night time mode. there is no light except around the players.

Doubtful I'll get a reply since this seems pretty much at a standstill but is there any way to disable Dizzy Mode? I love the Magic Wand, I do not love the motion-sickness I get with Dizzy Mode. I also do not know why anybody thought tying such a secret to something so damned easy to achieve, and such a good weapon, was a good idea but that's another thread... long story short, I'd like to disable the Dizzy Ball from showing up, is it possible?

I think there's no option to disable it in game, but I can create a custom build for you if you wish. That would permanently turn off the Dizzy Mode.
