Title: I Bought a New PC!!
Post by: MrMister on June 11, 2009, 12:07:23 AM
Which is why I've been inactive for the past few days, I'll let the following explain itself.

My PC Specs:
-AMD Phenom Quad Core Processor 2.2 GHz
-NVIDIA GeForce 9100 256MB
-6GB RAM
-Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit
-23" Widescreen Monitor 1920x1080

CD/DVD PC Games I Own:
-The Orange Box
-Halo PC
-Halo 2 Vista
-Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind
-Elder Scrolls IV: Obilivion
-Gears of War PC
-Bioshock
-Star Wars: Empire at War
-Diablo II
-Doom 3
-F.E.A.R.
-F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin
-Simpsons Hit & Run

Not to mention the TONS of games I can play that are loaded onto my hard drive such as Savage, emulators, and TrackMania.
This PC is great especially since I can run PS2 and GCN emulators now! :D

Anyways, that's all I got. Hell even the forum looks better from the insane resolution.

Damn son, assuming you're using DDR2 ram then I envy you!

Uh... hold on... Yea I am using DDR2

Most games that I listed that are 2006 and newer only run at 30/60 FPS if I run them at 1280x720 resolution sadly. This thing is a beast, but not a SUPER BEAST.

I'm still in love with it though.

This reminds me that I need to either fix my computer or buy a new one... I really don't want to put up with the security hassle from Vista though.
Also Mr, is it just Diablo II, or is it the expansion?

Okay...
1) On the past 3 PC's I've had for the last 6 years, I have only run into ONE security threat (On XP SP2) and I knocked that virus out in a half hour, no damage done. I don't think I will with Vista either, if I do quote me on it.
2) Just Diablo II, no expansion.

3) I want to give you guys some rough estimates of how well my PC is running the games I've installed so far... HEADS-UP LONG LIST AHEAD.
NOTE: I've ran all these programs with 1280x720 resolution (which is the data I'll show you below) essentially 720p even though my monitor natively runs at 1080p or 1920x1080 resolution.

*I played this game with a demo.
Note: DX10 Slows all my games down by 1 or 2 frames with a minor graphical enhancement.

The 9100 I have on the motherboard can do most standard graphical effects such as HDR, Volumetric Lighting, Motion Blur, and Depth of Field pretty well, but at the sarifice of 2 FPS or so for each effect effect. Some games can handle it though without a noticeable drop in frame rate. Overall I say this computer is leaps better than my old Compaq, which could only run Crysis, Zeno Clash, F.E.A.R. 2, and DMC4 at 10 FPS tops.

Bonus:
All 2D Emulators - PERFECT
N64/PSX Emulators - 58-60 FPS
GCN/PS2 Emulators - 30-50 FPS

*whew*

  • Crysis - 18-28 FPS Avg. @ Low Graphics (DX10)*

leaps better than my old Compaq, which could only run Crysis at 10 FPS tops.

lol

God, my computer can't even run GCN emulators at 30 fps. Stupid Dolphin.

Strangely enough, with my computer (before it's untimely demise), I had a bit of slowdown with N64 emulation, but PSX emulation ran without any slowdown... I dunno, maybe because I only played some of the old games like Crash Bandicoot, MediEvil, and Breath of Fire 3.

Ya, I got a laptop recently for cheap ($580) and it's actually not terrible... granted, it isn't a gaming machine, but still. Btw did you build yours or buy it pre-built mr?

Pre-built from HP. Not bad for $600.

Well, every game I throw at it has been pretty good on this PC so far... until now.

The Street Fighter IV PC Benchmark has come out and I ran it... only to watch my PC crash and burn.

That's at low or off on all graphics settings. I'm slightly ashamed of myself for buying this computer...
Well, guess I'll get to play RE5, SF4, and Crysis all at Max graphics in another 4 years.

In addition, it does run at 60-70 FPS when I have EVERYTHING turned off, windowed, and put it at 640x480 resolution.
I also FINALLY found out how NVidia numbers it's graphics chips and cards. For example, I have a GeForce 9100, the 9 stands for the series number and the 100 stands for the level of performance out of 900. Damnit.
It's still a good graphics chip, but not as great as I made it out to be, but it's still better than my old s****y NVidia 6150 LE.
Damn I'm bummed now, oh well back to F.E.A.R. 2! :D

TL;DR My PC is not as great as I thought it was. (But still kicks relatively-good ass.)

yeah.  the second number in Nvidia's is always significantly more important than the first. EX you would be way better off with a 8900 than a 9100 due to the fact that a 8900 has been maxed to the limitations of the 8000 series.  Its no biggie though Mr.Mr.  you can get a top-of-the-line video card now for pretty cheap and they aren't that hard to install.

Just go to best buy and they will give you tons of information.  :p  i always use them to get the latest Info, and then i buy the card online for half the price.

Anybody suggest what I can do to boost it up in power?

I can buy a dedicated video card for it, but I'm unsure of what I can get as I have a 300 watt power supply and I don't know what the PCI slot specs are.

Turn off Windows Aero if you are using it.
Go to Power Plans and turn on Maximum Performance.
Get a better Power Supply.
Get a nVidia 8800 GT Graphics Chip.

Actually before you posted, WK97, I actually did some research and found out that my computer in fact does kick ass, the only thing missing is a dedicated graphics card!

I'm going to by a 550W power supply and a BFG NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GT and shove them into my comp, which should boost my performance 32 times over. :D

Or should I shell out a bit more money and go higher on the GFX card list?

go higher.

btw, you are fairly better than my comp that i bought the parts for and built with cg.

and the only thing missing on mine is a good video card as well.

so i am looking for work and i am gonna save up money to buy a new one.
